Today’s entry will be a bit of a detour from our usual menu of craft related posts. I would like to pay tribute to a wonderful animator Oliver Postgate who sadly passed away on December 8th. You may not recognise the name but if you are aged about 30+ and grew up in England you are sure to be familiar with his work.
Oliver Postgate and his animation partner Peter Firmin were the animators that brought us iconic classics as;
- The Clangers
- Ivor the Engine
- Noggin The Nog
I adored all these shows and Noggin the Nog stories were definitely early motivators for learning to read as they had such fantastic characters and stories. The One show on BBC1 has just shown a tribute to Oliver and it turns out that Emily the little girl in most of the Bagpuss stories was actually the daughter of Peter Firmin and is still living on the farm where the stories were filmed.
For those fans who would like to share the memories of Oliver and Peters work there are sited dedicated to their productions;
- The Dragons Friendly Society;
This is the main link to their other sites dedicated to the individual programs
- Noggin the Nog
- Ivor the Engine;
- The Clangers;

RIP Oliver Postgate 1925 – 8 December 2008
I admire your work and it holds a special place in my heart, where it shall always remain. I dedicate this page to your memory and hope that more generations will discover your work as a result of these links. My thoughts and prayers are with your family and friends.
With deepest sympathy
