I have some very sad news today :( On June 2nd, my lovely budgie Harry died.
Harrysuddenly got poorley on Saturday 29th May, the vets were closed till Tuesday because of a Bank Holiday :( :( We tried our local vets on the Monday but the on call vet, by his own admission new nothing about birds. He spoke to a college but the first time he phoned back he was talking about symptoms Harry didn’t have. We explained the problems again, and he said his college told him what it might be and what drug to give him, bring Harry in and he would inject him. Given he knew nothing about birds and that he had got the symptoms so wrong the first time I wasn’t happy to let him near Harry.
Thanks to a link to a parrot forum, that my friend gave me, on the stamping forum. We found a truely wonderful avian vet, not too far away from us. We phoned them on Tuesday 1st June and they said bring Harry straight in. Poor Harry he really was desperately ill by then and hadn’t eaten or drunk for days. The nice vet, examined him and said he needed to keep Harry in to give him fluids to stabilise him. We phoned Wednesday morning and they said Harry had improved a little and to phone back tomorrow. Sadly though, they phoned us later that afternoon, to say Harry had died. It was always going to be a miracle if Harry had made it, but I was grateful that they had been so kind and gentle with him and given him is best shot.
I’m devastated. Thankfully the other three birds are all fit and well and don’t seem to have caught what Harry had, which is a miracle in itself. Although he was only 4 years old, Harry did have a good life, in a nice big cage with feathered friends and room to fly.
Here are links to the bird forum, where I post, which gives more details about Harry’s flying lessons, we gave him, when he started to get pudgy. Check out Tiny being Harry’s personal coach on the flying lessons.
Keep a close eye on your feathered friends, and make sure you know where your nearest avian vet is BEFORE you need one. :(
