Reason For Buying
I had ideas for dimensional projects using modeling paste-but that dries slightly soft. When I saw this demonstrated on Creat and Craft, I pounced on it, as this does the kinds of things I wanted to do. It also looked like it dried much harder.
Pros/Cons
- Can be used alone for a white finish
- Builds textures and dimension. Great for faux stone like finishes
- Mixes with colours for a coloured ground
- Dries overnight
- From the jar it is white, so ideal to paint over
- Stamp into it while it’s still damp for debossed effects
- Easy to clean tools in water, clean immediately so the paste doesn’t dry on your tools
- No smell, other dimensional products have had harsh ammonia smell, but there is no smell with this product YEY!!!!
- Use with stencils and over textured paper for effects
Cons
Haven’t got any, its done all I asked of it and more
Build Quality
Excellent, It really holds shapes you press into it or create with it and mixed with colour or over painted performs superbly.
Value for Money
Texture paste is excellent value for money, it is such a versatile exciting product. These are samples from just two afternoons playing with texture paste for the first time. Tutorials are planned
Would I buy it Again?
Totally! LOVE love this product, every time I use it I find a new technique.
Summing up
Very versatile product. Alters how paint behaves when mixed with colour. Great for adding textures and dimension to your creative projects. If you haven’t tried it yet but like dimensional effects and textures, get some, its fantastic. Because of the weight the product adds to the surface, it is best to use it on a firm support. I’ve used it mainly on Mount board, but have got away with using it on something lighter; 300 gsm, but I’m still going to mount that onto mount board for better support.
I adore textures and look forward to experimenting with a variety of tools with this paste to see if I can recreate my favorite textures in paint. If you have masks and embossing folders experiment with cardstock and paste combinations. I have now been able to use my collection of brass stencils that I haven’t had the dexterity to use before.
Really enjoying this product, its exciting and so much fun. Hope you get some soon and will share how you use this excellent product. I’ll experiment and see if painting over it will give me a good enough black, otherwise I’ll beg D.R to make a black version of the product, as this is going to be FANTASTIC with those interference/shimmering colours they make.
Short version: Joy in a Jar!

Thanks for the great review. I love experimenting with texture paste as well for my artwork and I’m always on the lookout to try different brands of texture paste. I will keep a lookout for this brand in my local art shop!

Thanks, glad you liked it. More techniques on the way
Can it stick to plastic surfaces ?
Try it, I think it might scrape or peel off very slick surfaces but if you could sand the plastic surface to give the texture paste some key to grab into it might be ok. Also worth giving some kind of sealing layer of something to help adhere it.
Check out the Art tab at the top of the page and go to the Art Manufacturers/suppliers section. I’ve put a link in there to Daler Rowney they are worth contacting to see if they have more info on which surfaces it would safely work on. They are also on Twitter
Let me know how you get on with it. I have plans to use it on plastic too, but haven’t had chance to experiment yet. It might work on some plastics and not others. For exaple I used Golden Fluid acrylics over polymer clay and the Fluid acrylic never did dry, so its worth making a test piece before you try it on a special piece.
Thanks for the reply.
There are many things I’d love to try but I guess buying something just to try is not my option.
I’m in Asia & all imported craft products are triple the prices listed in the west !
I’d have something like a project in my head but it’s not easy to find the right materials/tools/paints/primer etc etc just to get it started.
Ahh I see your problem, I have the same thing here too, as I love products from America
Like Golden Paints and Scor It boards.
If you let me know what kind of plastic you were thinking of using it on, if I have something similar I’ll give it a test for you if you like. Flexible surfaces like acetate probably aren’t going to work as when the plastic flexes because of the weight and dimension of the texture paste its likely to peel off. If you are thinking of something more solid or something that won’t get a lot of handling then it might be ok.
Do try getting in touch with Daler Rowney or Winsor & Newton as an alternative company, they are very helpful and have done lots of testing during the creation of the product so if you have a specific surface in mind, may well be able to advise you.
Have you tried looking at retailers in the USA? I Wonder if their prices would be better for you? Golden are a fantastic brand for acrylic paint and mediums that I’ve had a lot of sucess with too.
Thanks for the suggestions.

The plastic that I refer to is the kind of material for phone covers.
I’m thinking to create a bit of artwork on the covers & give to friends.
So, phone covers…the materials are kind of tricky !
People hold them all the time; Putting them in their bags, handbags, pockets, chuck them anywhere.
I’m worried if my artworks on the covers fade or smudge in just a few minutes after giving to somebody or worst ! – the female friends would curse me if the artworks stain their hands or their expensive handbags ! Ha ! Ha ! Ha !!
Somebody told me one time that Texture Paste is not suitable for the embossing artworks that I’d do on those phone covers.
Texture Paste is more for hanging artworks or cards.
So, what do you think ?…is there a product/material that is lightweight & stick to those plastic phone covers for say a few months ?
You could say that I should make my own plastic castings but I have to make the molds as well !! I have about 50 friends, I certainly don’t want to cast & mold 50 different embossing artworks just to make my friends happy !! Ha! ha !! ha !
(10 minutes now & I’m still laughing !!!)
