I can’t imagine them as trees, do they still get red leaves if left out in the light all the time. I though they had to be kept in the dark to achieve the red coloring.

You are right the red part is not the flower but bracts or modified leaves, the flowers are in the centre – small white ones. They originally come from Mexico where they grow into small trees :) Now you really wanted to know all that didn’t you?? LOL
