Welcome Back

Here are some new designs I created for my pocket Filofax, mostly diary pages but also a notes page too.

Serif Craft Artist

I created these using Serif Craft Artist software. Having designed the layout framework I saved it as a layout and it meant I could then make it in Pocket size with only a few tweaks. Future pages can have colours, fonts and background page edges changed easily. Its a great way to personalise your Filofax the way you like it.

Using the software I can also save my own layouts and elements as digikits which helps with future designs. Check out the links below for more information about this brilliant, versatile software. It makes great cards, scrapbook pages and gift bags but with imagination you can do so much more with it too.

Welcome Back

What happens when you take two acrylic paintings and merge them? Today I’m sharing a picture which is a digital blend of two of my recent mixed media backgrounds.

When two mixed media backgrounds collide

The first picture was

The second was

Mixed media distressed background Pinks & blues

These were two of my favourite background paintings so I scanned them into the computer and then took them into Photoshop Elements and played with the opacity and this was the result. Play a bit more and you could add a photo in there somewhere too.

Hope you like it, think I’ll do more of these :)

Welcome Back

Want to add some dimension to your mixed media projects? Today I’ll share how to create a textured stone effect, perfect for book covers and all kinds of projects.

Here we are for Lesson 7 in the Mixed Media workshop. This week Embossed Stone. I love this effect and it’s really easy to create with just a few simple steps and not many supplies.

Hope you have fun with this technique, do leave me a comment and show me any projects you create using it, I’d love to see what you are all making. How are you getting on with this series, are you learning lots of new techniques to take in your own directions?

If you are enjoying this series, do tell others about it, the more the merrier. See you next Wednesday for Lesson 8.

Another new colour for distressed art, yellow! Break outside your colour comfort Zone and see where it takes you. Grunge and distress doesn’t have to be brown ;)

Mixed media distressed background, yellow is new for me.

Mixed media distressed background, yellow is new for me.

I tend to stick to earth tones for distressed look but have decided to break out of that rut and experiment with new colours. This bright yellow was a Daler Rowney and scared me silly but a gentle wash of Paynes grey soon put it back in the aged and worn look I love so much for backgrounds.

I love Craftsy but get very annoyed at how hard it is to stream their videos smoothly. I tried their suggestions;

  1. Watch in Google Chrome (this is a must the platform seems to hate anything else)
  2. Let Craftsy test your connection and choose the best speed at which to send you the video
  3. Press play, then pause for a while then replay

But it was so much simpler than that in the end.

How to turn off the High Definition option on Craftsy videos

  1. Use Google Chrome (this seems a must)
  2. Having chosen let Craftsy decide on the stream rate, then press play on the video you want to watch
  3. This is the key bit. On the right hand side, just under the video you will see a ‘HD’ logo, meaning the video is High Definition, all you do is right-click on it to TURN OFF the HD. Yey happy dance, it worked a treat!!!!!

When I clicked play the video gave the dotted polo for 5 seconds then the whole video played the smoothest I’ve ever had it play. I was watching upstairs with the laptop on a wired connection rather than WiFi as a usually do but I can arrange to be on that now and then but this simple toggle off of the HD has solved my issues.

So I humbly apologise to Craftsy for my grumpy rant on Twitter the other day, this has allowed me to watch your excellent videos at last. I’d have bought more long ago had I been able to watch them.

To all those people swearing at their computers or cursing their internet and the Craftsy platform I hope sharing this will help you too to get the videos you want to see to work on your PCs.

Best wishes and thanks for reading, see you soon

Welcome Back In today’s post I will be reviewing;

Staedtler Triplus Pens

Staedtler Triplus Pens

Product Details

  • Manufacturer/Brand; Staedtler/ Triplus
  • Item number: 323 SB20
  • RRP at time of writing: £24.50 but cheaper on Amazon ;)

Reason For Buying

I wanted some colours to use with Doodling and struggling with my dexterity I wondered if the triangle-shaped barrels of these pens would help.

Pros/Cons

Pros

  • Good selection of colours
  • Triangle shaped barrel comfortable in the hand
  • The caps fit very well but are easy to remove
  • The plastic case is robust and folds back on itself to act as a stand as you use the pens
  • Case stays closed for travelling with your pens
  • 1.0 mm fibre tip pens, work well on cartridge paper and cover well

Cons

  • The option of more colours would have been nice, but the range is still good for general doodle style of art

Build Quality

Excellent! The nibs are robust and seem to last well. The firm fitting caps mean if you travel with these pens there is much less risk of the caps dropping off. The case being able to be used as a stand is a nice feature and like the lids is a secure closure but still easy to open.

Value for Money

TBH I would be a bit tight and not want to pay £25 but these were a bargain at just over £11 on Amazon and at that price I am very happy. They are quality and are worth their higher price, I’m just on a tight budget at the moment.

Would I buy it Again?

Yes, they have a finer nibbed version of these pens and I’m looking to get a set of those for working in smaller areas and for lettering.

Summing up

Superb pens, love them a lot. Great for bold lettering or doodling. Bear in mind they are water based so not ideal for mixed media if you plan to use wet media over the top but that a niggle. Great pens, try them see if you love them too.
