Welcome back

Today we have the Tortoise-shell bind also known as Kikko Toji. So far I have not done any stamping onto the cover.

 Japanese Stab bindings; Tortoise-shell bind

This book is A6 in size, and has twelve white pages. I will try making thicker books when I have a stand for my Dremel drill. At present I am only using a needle tool to make the holes, so I am piercing the two cover boards, then using a cover board over half the pages and piercing through those. I then repeat this for the remaining pages. Once I have a drill stand, it should be possible to clamp the entire book together and drill through everything in one step. The thread I have used is Barbour No 18 cord 3, which is pre coloured black. I have waxed it myself before sewing.

Instructions for this bind, that I followed, can be found in Volume I Non Adhesive Binding; Books without Paste or Glue by Keith Smith. There is a link to Keith’s website in the side panel of this blog labeled ‘Bookbinding Links’

Best wishes and thanks for reading

Billie xx

Welcome Back

Over the next few days I will be sharing my Japanese stab bound books with you. They were created a couple of weeks ago now, and a couple of them have been decorated.

The first one is the Japanese 4 Hole Binding also know as Yotsume Toji

I have used ranger Adirondack inks on the stamped piece, for the background. Versafine Onyx Black for the main image and spritzed over the entire piece using Perfect Pearls in a Mini Mister.

This turned out better than I had hoped and I was pleased with this for a first attempt. This book is A6 in size, and has twelve white pages. I will try making thicker books when I have a stand for my Dremel drill. At present I am only using a needle tool to make the holes, so I am piercing the two cover boards, then using a cover board over half the pages and piercing through those. Hope you like it too, more soon

Best wishes

Billie :)

P.S My wonderful husband has fixed the issue with the blog so I won’t be dissapearing for a bit after all. I will still be uploading to the blog but it is worth checking the archives sections as if it is possible to post to old dates I will be putting the articles from the old blog on here under the dates they were originally published on the spaces blog. I’ll try and post a list at then end of each week of any posts added to archives should you wish to review them.

Thanks for reading and see you next time xxx
