Welcome Back
This month The Virtual Crafting Challenge was Lacquers & Glazes. Regular viewers will remember that for this challenge I was playing with Perfect pearls and a selection of Golden products. Here is a video tutorial of my results; how to create a pearlescent glaze and pearlescent paint.
You Will Need
- Golden Fluid Acrylic Paints, colours of your choice
- Golden Acrylic Gazing Medium in Gloss
- Ranger Perfect Pearls, colors of your choice
- Tin Plate for a mixing pallet
- pallet Knife for mixing
- Brush
- Scrap Card
Golden’s Acrylic Glazing Medium extends the open time of the paints and is key when you add the perfect pearls to stop everything drying too fast.
Method
- Select a paint colour that is either transparent or semi transparent, from the Fluid Acrylic paints
- Add a few drops of Glazing Liquid. Mix these together, this creates a glaze, which is nice enough but for extra wow…
- Add a small amount of Perfect Pearl in a coordinating colour to your paint/glaze mix. At first it will seem gritty but keep blending with your pallet knife until it is smooth.
Try this on dark card as well as light. If you don’t have any fluid acrylic paint, you can still make a light paint with the glazing liquid and the Perfect Pearls, this will create a paler lacquer that you can now use on glass, metal and other gloss items.
For suppliers of Golden products check out the pannel at the side of the blog where I have added a link to Golden’s website. Rangers site link, is loctated on the Stamping page, under manufacturers.
It was fun to experiment and I learnt a lot, have fun and don’t be afraid to have a play with your products. Who knows what new techniques you might discover along the way.
Best wishes and thanks for reading, see you soon

Hey Thanks very much for the tutorial. I am looking for a faux pearl finish for beads. I will seal them with a varnish to make them durable/impervious to sweat, oils, etc.
Do you recommend a non acrylic medium or paint instead for this application?
Hi Mari
Glad you liked the video. Golden do make a pearl coloured paint, although I haven’t personally tried it. As for your question, if the beads are wooden then the paint will soak into the wood quite well but if the beads are plasic then the paint will sit on the surface and have the potential for being more likely to scratch off, so adding a clear glaze over the top would help protect any special painted designs you have added. I am new to using acrylic paints, so sadly I am not overly experienced to their longevity in a variety of situations.
I have used Polymer Medium Gloss as a varnish over alcohol inks on plastics and it has worked beautifully. In the side bar on the right, there is a link to the Golden website, their customer services team are very helpful. To be on the safe side, on this occassion I would advice you to contact them and see what they say. I would hate to ‘guess’ an answer and ruin your project for you.
Hope that helps a little. I tend to be someone who will give it a go and see if it works, but that would be on a test piece rather than a finished precious project 😉
Best wishes
Billie 🙂
