In today’s post, a review of;
Provocraft Cuttlebug Embossing Folders
Why I bought them
Since I have a lot of trouble with dexterity, embossing using an embossing tool and metal stencil is beyond me. These folders make embossing so much easier.
Pros
The Embossing Folders are well made, from a sturdy plastic. As the name suggests they open like folders. You simply open the folder, pop in your card, run it through your Cuttlebug and you are done. There are a wide selection of designs to suit many different styles.
Cons
Not really got any cons on them. It can be a bit tricky to determine which pattern is which, once you discard the packaging. To get round this, I emboss a piece of pearlescent card with each folder, then file the card in front of the folder it matches, in the box in which I store them. It would be good if Provocraft wrote the design name on the folders, but again if you want to quickly sort through them in the box, just use a permanent pen to write the folder name on it. (As I did, shown in the picture above). The (D) is because this particular folder De bosses rather than Embosses. To have an embossed pattern on a specific side of the cardstock, I just flip the card over, for this particular folder. This one is Textile.
Value for Money
Great! Around£5 each, they are sturdy and don’t take up much room to store.
Would I buy Again
Yes, definitely. These are great to collect 🙂

I learned something new about those… while I was debating about getting a Cuttlebug, I bought a folder on a whim…… and put it on my countertop, with a piece of card in the folder, and rolled over it as hard as I could with my rolling pin…. worked pretty well! So, if you want only a few (I’d be exhausted after about 5 — took a lot of pressure!), and you know you won’t need the machine again, you can always use the folders without the Cuttlebug 🙂
Billie, do you happen to know if the Cuttlebug folders can be used in other things, like the Sizzix machines? (Which are a lot cheaper…)
Hi Marguerite
All power to your elbow 🙂 good for you finding an alternative way to use the folders 🙂 I’d never have the strength to do it that way, but if it works for you yey.
As for your question about using the folders in a Sizzix machine, I honestly don’t know. If you have a local retailer it would be worth asking them, you could try contacting the manufacturers but they are likely to be biased towards their own machines.
Personally I went for the Cuttlebug because of the versatility, it will use dies and folders from other companies, as will the Wizard machine from Spellbinders.
The issue I have with Sizzix, is that they appear to require you to buy a different machine, for each of their die styles they bring out. I may be wrong, but it is what the merchandising appears to require. Being short on cash and storage space, I didn’t want to be locked into that kind of system.
Here is a list of manufacturers if you wish to contact them for advice for alternative machines.

Hope that helps 🙂

Heh – I see here http://www.scrapbookmegastore.com.au/category135_1.htm that they are interchangeable. (Sizzix works in Cuttlebug machines, too.) Good to know!
