Welcome Back

I think this may be what they call Blue Monday? Perhaps its the perfect time to share this art concept with you. You Tube did that, ‘you may like this’ recomendation the other night and BOY were they right. If you are really stressed, over think, have that 3am and brain won’t shut up, or are giving yourself a hard time today, grab a pen and paper and read on. I found making this art soo soothing. Its definately all about the process of making it, its soo soothing. If you like colouring in and zentangle, maybe you will like this too. If you found zentangle hard going on hands and eyes, this one is a great alternative.

Here is my first try with Neurographic art, January 2022.

About this art style.

  1. Its called Neuro Grapic art
  2. You don’t need lots of art supplies to do it
  3. Regular pen or pencil and sheet of any paper will do, to get started
  4. If you like colouring in, it takes your brain to that same zen space
  5. Its easier on the hands (and eyes) than Zen tangle
  6. Please watch the videos in the links section for the how too, and background of it.
  7. For me, I found it helpful to ease racing and distressing thoughts
  8. Its about the process, rather than the final piece of art. Its the process of creating it, that gives the brain a softer place to be for a while.
  9. There is some science behind this and has been used in therapy, see videos who go into the detail of some of that. but short version, to quote Ruby Wax ‘Brains are not great at multi tasking’. So if you are in a distressing headspace, if you can give them something soothing to focus on, and are able to send all your attention to that, they drop the other stuff.

I’m not trained in any of this, so can’t make claims as to what it will or won’t do for you. I am someone who struggles with anxiety, depression, and the over thinking racing thoughts that come with that and I did find making this art, took my head to softer safer kinder places.

As a child I used to scribble and later come back in and colour in the gaps, this seems to be taking it to another level. I can see it being a helpful tool for my anxiety managing tool box. I can use this just as a doodling distraction in and of itself. I can also use it around times when Im really stuck in the over thinking, rumination and 3am brain won’t turn off, by doing the advice in the first video, of writing the thing I’m stressing about, on the back of the paper, turn paper over, and then scribble a few seconds. Then let brain drift to kinder places as I focus just on finding the connections and curving those lines.

In looking up the links for this post, I have now found a certified trainer in this and linked her videos below. Take your pic as to where your interest and current head space allows.

Rather than writing it all out, its much easier to watch than to explain. These first two are the you might like this ones that You Tube showed me, simple to get you started. The later ones are from a certified instructor in the method and are more indepth, especially toward the theraputic side of the method.

  1. You Tube channel: Bethany Thiele, Art Teacher
Video name: Neurographic Art Tutorial : Mindfulness In Art https://youtu.be/NoIgdt-uQR0 This is a good one as it walks you through the process more slowly.
  2. You Tube channel name Emmanuel School of Fine ArtsVideo name neurographic drawing art lesson https://youtu.be/XZf4Fbr6dU0 This was the first one I saw, but its been listed as ‘you tube kids’ so you can’t add it to favorites, which is a shame.

These next ones are more indepth and focused on the therapy side of this from a certified teacher, Anna Romanenko

  1. You Tube channel NeuroGraphic Academy. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzaHdD70WRnL6rprZVVbaBw
  2. YouTube channel NeurographicaAcademy. Video name Neurographica online class. NeuroTree of my Health https://youtu.be/ei-AxcAYXvk This one is is indepth, coming at it from the therapy side of things.
  3. NeuroGraphica Introduction Class. Basic elements and steps. Lifting Inner Constraints. For Beginners https://youtu.be/UaphPkS9fYQ

Oops another really long post. I got really excited about this last night and my first go with it went very well. My aim with the blog, is to share ideas and tips that have helped my in my journey. I hope they help you too, however what helps or does not, is a very individual thing. It is not my intention to say, this will work for you in the same way. You do you, always.

Being honest, on the page I’m on right now, which is early grief, and very stressed out. I can’t process the more indepth videos, that Anna has posted. The first two I posted, are enough for getting started and the other links, will be more useful for reasearch and education, when I’m on firmer ground.

Hope you enjoy the process of this art style. Either trying it yourself or with more research on the video sites, maybe watching others create it. Looks like there are a few variations on the theme, so have fun exploring all that. I think this is one I’ll try for a while, it was less painful on my limited dexterity than zentangle was. I liked how it looked a bit like marbled paper or inkblot tests. Mostly though, I enjoyed the process and how it took my brain to softer place for a while

Best wishes, thanks for reading, See you soon

Welcome Back

I have a confession, I LOVE books. I was very lucky as a child that my Mum surrounded me with books and paper and crayons. Now these books were not always new, a lot were pre loved by others she knew and handed round to us to enjoy, keep or pass along.

My dyslexia makes reading novels difficult, so its all in the font as to weather I can read it or not. Kindle was a breakthrough from that point of view, as I was able to make the font larger, spaces between the lines larger, and even have it read aloud to me, so I admit thats the way I go for novels.

Why is this a new kind of book club?

There are lots of book clubs about novels, so this book club is a bit different, this one will be for art themed books, kind books, self care books, empowering books that kind of thing.

The sort of books that make you want to grab your art supplies and get creating. The kind of books you can dip into as and when you have a few moments spare, because not everyone has big blocks of time or capacity to read long posts, or long books.

I know in the past my posts have been really indepth reviews, but honestly, my health issues are making that kind of post difficult now. Instead and to keep posts short n sweet (that’s a first eh!) I’ll keep it minimal. Title, author, ISBN, where to buy and maybe a line or two about why I like it. Then an invitation for you to share your thoughts on the book, if you have it too.

Do you like this idea? Shall I start writting some of these?

Would love some feed back on this, so thought I’d ask while people are maybe not back at work yet.

As a spoonie, I have to plan ahead and write when I can, as I can’t post to order. This will need to be written ahead of time so they can go out in something like a regular slot.

I have some more ideas for the blog, so keep checking back in the coming days to find out more.

Best wishes and thanks for reading, see you soon

Welcome Back

For todays kind words, I wrote a poem. Zoom in to see the words or scroll down for the written version. It can be a challenging time of year, for so many of us. For a variety of reasons, time moves quicker for some than for others. Some people can feel forgotten. If time got away from you this season, please keep reading and share a link to this post with someone you are missing or thinking about today.

You are not forgotten, I am thinking about you
I am thinking of you poem

If you don’t feel like writing, perhaps send a link to this page, or share the photo above.

I’ll type it out too, as the light wasn’t kind for the photo, and not sure screen readers will read words on photographs. Do let me know about the screen reader thing, as I’m figuring out the best way to share some more poems going forwards.

I am thinking about you

If you’re feeling, sad and blue

And think, that I forgot,

I promise you, that its not you,

I’m just going through a lot.

*

Please, don’t count your worth,

In cards, or likes, or presents by a tree.

And know you’re worth, much more than that

To everyone, and me.

*

If there’s someone in your life, today

Who you miss, with all your heart,

Even if a cirucumstance, has kept you both apart.

Just take a moment, send a heart, or a line or two.

*

A call or a text message, could mean the world, from you.

You don’t have to be a poet, just tell it like it is,

That you are glad, they are in, your life

No matter where that is.

*

The world won’t always, be like this

We will, find safer ground,

Then we can, get together,

When we all, can gather round.

*

If not hand in hand,

The side by side.

Together we’ll get through,

I promise you’re not forgotten,

I am thinking about you.

There are many reasons, why we loose touch with each other over time. Some are intentional, others often are not. Emails and addresses change and not everyone gets the reminder of the new one.

In a world based on goals or tasks we can measure, sometimes we get drawn into basing our worth, on what others think of us. But when you seek external validation, you are also giving those people the power to take away your happiness. Lets not do that.

This poem can a message for anyone who may be feeling forgotten, or who is worried they might have not sent a card. Perhaps you weren’t able to send cards, for whatever reason, and want someone to know they are remembered and thought of.

I put it in as a picture and wrote it out, to make it easier to share. I’d love a link back to this blog if you use this poem.

If you could do with hearing more kind words today, have a look at The Alternative Advent Project I’ve been writing about this month, please go to Day one, which I will link below. https://billiescraftroom.wordpress.com/2021/12/03/the-alternative-advent-project/

This project was about creating kind words for yourself, to help you through the season. It wasn’t a grinch list, not judging, correcting, blaming or shaming. I was only going to write the few words, then as ever, I struggle to do short so the extra words flowed. Have a look at the link above and see how you would like to do your version of this project.

I hope this project helped you through the season.

May today be as kind to you as possible.

Best wishes and thanks for reading, see you soon

PS, I scheduled these a while ago, so if I don’t make all the posts from now till 24th bear with me, health issues may challenge this. But I have another jolly project for the 12 Days of Christmas and they are all written, and scheduled will go live 25 December onwards. If I don’t see you before and you are celebrating Christmas rather than Yule, I wish you all the best and see you soon. x

Welcome Back

For todays kind words, I wrote

Whatever you choose to do, or not do, is totally ok’

Reflection

Feeling the joys of the season, yey. Not so much n needing to hide n wait it out? Thats not easy to navigate is it. If you find yourself solo and not loving it, just know its ok if you want to sleep through it, to have beans on toast or cereal and not the traditional meal coz that’s not for you. Make it your own as best you can.

Lets try to be kind to ourselves and with each other, life is challenging enough, without adding impossibly high expectations that might not even be our own.

What kind words are you writing for yourself today? Do tell me about them in the comments below.

Welcome Back

For todays kind words, I wrote

What is the snuggliest blanket or jumper you have, hunker down, snuggle up?’

Reflection

Not everyone has the joy of central heating, or even if they do, not everyone can afford to put it on. Weather you are feeling the chill due to temperature or feeling less than perky because you may be missing someone, a blanket wrapped around your shoulders can be an alternative way to feel like you are held. Lots of blankets n lots of layers also help keep out the physical drafts too.

So I in vite you to hunker down with the softest blanket or jumper you have and its totally ok to imaging it is someone giving you a warm hug.

Tell me about them in the comments below.

Welcome Back

For todays kind words, I wrote

Come and watch the clouds’

Reflection

Here is something I’ve noticed about anxiety, the world is fast (I know no *** sherlock) but when we run, things seem to get faster, the world gets faster still, so we run even faster. And so it repeats, for a short time that might be ok, but its damaging to live like this all the time. Doing this long term can take you to a point of exhaustion and burn out.

So lets take a second, take a few deep breaths and with or without your chosen beverage, come and look at the sky. Watch the weather, watch the clouds. No aim, no goal, no expectation. Just being still and regrouping a little.

What were your kind words to yourself today? Do tell me about them in the comments below.
