Today I would like to share my first step into Hemp leaf binding aslso know as Asa-No-Ha-Toji.
I have decorated this one, so here is a picture of the finished book. As before I have used Ranger Adirondack inks for the background of the stamped area, and Versa Fine for the main image. The name of the stamp is Dancing Crane but it reminds me of the Peace Crane.
This book is A6 in size, and has twelve white pages. I will try making thicker books when I have a stand for my Dremel drill. At present I am only using a needle tool to make the holes, so I am piercing the two cover boards, then using a cover board over half the pages and piercing through those. I then repeat this for the remaining pages. Once I have a drill stand, it should be possible to clamp the entire book together and drill through everything in one step. The thread I have used is Barbour No 18 cord 3, which is pre coloured black. I have waxed it myself before sewing.
Instructions for this bind, that I followed, can be found in Volume I Non Adhesive Binding; Books without Paste or Glue by Keith Smith. There is a link to Keith’s website in the side panel of this blog labelled ‘Bookbinding Links’
If you have any comments or questions do leave me a message in the box below.

This is the first time I commented here and I should say you give genuine, and quality information for bloggers! Great job.
p.s. You have an awesome template for your blog. Where have you got it from?
Hi FloorJacks
Thanks for your comment 🙂 The template is a default one from WordPress ‘MistyLook by Sadish’ I think there is a link to it at the very bottom of each page posted???? I have modified it by adding my own image to the banner area.
Cheers
Billie 🙂
